Snake River Fur Post (North West Company Fur Post)
A Minnesota Historical Society site a few minutes west of town that reconstructs an 1804 fur-trade post on the Snake River, with interpreters in period dress, exhibits, and riverside grounds you can wander. Works for history buffs, families with kids, and casual visitors alike. If you do one local-history thing on your trip, do this one.
Three Twenty Brewing + Voyageur Park
The natural one-two: grab a beer at Three Twenty Brewing Co. (small craft brewery, great patio, rotating food trucks), then walk across the river to Voyageur Park, home of a 35-foot redwood voyageur statue, a playground, picnic space, and river views. It's "Pine City in two hours," and if the food truck of the day looks good, you have your dinner plan.
On the water
Pine City sits between two excellent fishing lakes, both minutes from downtown:
- Cross Lake (938 acres): walleye, muskie, northern, bass, panfish. The public boat launch gives access to the river and the lake.
- Pokegama Lake (1,536 acres): everything Cross has, plus sturgeon and catfish. Public access off County Rd 7.
- Challeen Park: fishing docks right in town for shore casting, no boat needed.
- Snake River: calm paddling sections for canoes and kayaks; Banning State Park (below) has the whitewater.
Hikes & outdoors
Banning State Park
The showcase hike of the area, 20 minutes up I-35 near Sandstone. Trails run along the Kettle River past rapids and an old sandstone quarry. Our recommended route: Wolf Creek Falls via the Quarry Loop: about 3.5 miles, easy to moderate. Dogs welcome on-leash on all regular trails.
Closer wooded walks with water views: the Kettle River area trails (multiple trailheads) and the St. Croix River area trails east of town. Both are quiet, pretty, and dog-friendly on-leash.
Grand Casino Hinckley
Eighteen miles north on I-35, an easy 25-minute drive. Slots, table games, restaurants, and live entertainment. If you're into it, it's right there; if you're not, skip it without guilt. (Either way, Tobies in Hinckley is a mandatory cinnamon-roll stop.)

Day trips
- North to Duluth (~1.5 hrs): Canal Park, the Aerial Lift Bridge, Lake Superior shoreline, Hawk Ridge for birders. Leave early, stop at Tobies on the way.
- South to the Twin Cities (~1 hr): Mall of America, museums, Twins games, all within reach for a day.
- East to Taylors Falls (~1 hr): boat tours, cliff hiking at Interstate State Park, scenic St. Croix river drives.
Bringing the dog?
- Banning State Park: the best dog-friendly hike around (on-leash, all trails).
- An off-leash dog park within 20 miles. Check BringFido for current details.
- Sniffspot rentals near Pine City: private fenced yards by the hour for worry-free off-leash time.
Our house has a fully fenced yard where off-leash is fine, which is one reason we get so many dog families.
Coming with kids?
- Voyageur Park: playground + the giant voyageur statue
- Pizza Pub: family dinner that won't be a fight (the Asian boneless wings are a sleeper hit)
- A&W: a real carhop, novel for kids who've never seen one; Coney Tuesdays
- Lake days at Cross or Pokegama: easy public access points
Or just sit on the deck
We won't pretend everything has to be activity-driven. Some of the best stays at our place have been people who barely left the property: morning coffee on the deck, an afternoon at the lake half a mile away, and a fire in the pit after dark. That counts as things to do in Pine City too.
Stay a while
The Pine City House sleeps 8, welcomes dogs, and sits half a mile from the Cross Lake boat launch, one hour north of the Twin Cities.
